Dental Care

Here at Bayshore Veterinary Clinic we are very concerned about preventing periodontal disease. The best way to prevent this disease is by practicing good oral health. Dr. Singh wants to work with each of our clients to make sure owners are properly educated about the benefits of good oral health. Just like our kids, our pets need oral care as well. A very high percentage of pets have some form of periodontal disease already and that can cause a lot of discomfort and pain.

Just like in a human, periodontal disease begins when food is stuck to the teeth and not removed. Bacteria loves this, because it now has nourishment to rapidly divide. This is eventually what causes plaque and when that hardens we refer to it as tartar. The tartar can physically start to expose the gum line of our pets teeth by pushing it up. The exposed gum is what can lead to an infection which can cause cavities, lost teeth and many other medical problems. In severe cases the bacterial infection can enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body and effect other organs such as the kidney. We call this a systematic spread and often refer to it as sepsis. This is why we believe regular dental care at home and a regular dental cleaning at Bayshore Veterinary Clinic is important.
