What is an Emergency?

Sometimes our pets get sick at odd times and we often don’t know whether this is an emergency or something that can wait until morning. Whenever you are unsure please don’t hesitate to call us at 414-964-7009. To help you with this decision below are 5 cases that should be looked at right away!

Trauma: This can be anything from getting attacked by another animal, getting a cut, or getting hit by car. Often our pets will not show signs of discomfort and may even get up and run away, please do not take this as a sign they are ok. Many times our pets go into shock after a traumatic event and think they are ok even though inside something serious could be happening. Please call us or come into our clinic right away if your pet has suffered any kind of trauma.

Heatstroke: With summer approaching (hopefully) our fury pets are very susceptible to overheat. On very hot days please try to keep your pet inside. However, any animal can get a heatstroke on those sweltering days if they are not careful. The signs to look out for are, staggering, drooling, red gums, fainting and vomiting. If you notice any of these please call us or bring your pet in right away.

Poisoning: Even though we love and train our pets to the best of our abilities, our goofy loved ones sometimes eat things they should not. If you suspect your pet has eaten something they should not have such as antifreeze for dogs and lily plants for cats among many other things. Please call us right away! There are many things that can be toxic to your pet so if you are unsure please call us and ask or try google! Depending upon what was ingested the signs can vary dramatically so if you notice anything out of the ordinary give us a call!

Vomiting and Diarrhea: Unexplained vomiting and diarrhea may indicate the presence of Parvo, which is potentially a fatal and serious disease. Young puppies are especially susceptible to this so anytime you notice your little one vomiting or having diarrhea it is a serious concern. Diarrhea alone can be very harmful if they are not treated right away. Even if they are not actively vomiting, retching can indicate many serious disorders such as a GDV. So if you notice your pet presenting with these signs please call us right away or bring him/her in.

Choking: Just like our kids, our pets love to put things in their mouth that they shouldn’t. So just like kids, many small things can get stuck in there and cause choking. If you can see it superficially and easily are able to pull it out please do so. However if these attempts do not immediately produce results, please call us or bring your pet in right away!
